So after what I felt was a disappointing showing in Mordenkainen’s Tome of Foes, Wizards of the Coast instantly redeem themselves with the announcement of not one but TWO upcoming adventures – both of which set in the city of Waterdeep. I’m excited and here’s why you should be too!
First up, let’s talk about what is Part 1 of a the two part adventure Waterdeep: Dragon Heist.
So what’s the deal? This is the first part of two adventures set in the City of Waterdeep and will run from level 1-5 in what is going to be an entirely urban affair where the party will spend their entire time within the city limits. Along with new chase rules the book will also give players the option to run a tavern (likely as a base of operation) and the book will include all of the rules to handle that.
Interestingly the adventure is also going to feature four villains with the villain changing each time you play it, potentially giving you an entirely different adventure each time it’s run. Since it’s release, the Starter Set adventure “Lost Mine of Phandelver” has been the go-to adventure for newbies but this could definitely change that and make it not so monotonous on the DM who has to run through the same thing for each new group they introduce the game to. The rest of the book is said to feature pages upon pages of lore about the city itself and is set to be a sourcebook for Dungeon Master’s to be able to create their own adventures in the city.
Here’s what Chris Perkins had to say:
“Waterdeep Dragon Heist takes D&D back to civilization in an environment which encourages a lot of roleplaying. A lot of the inspiration was from things like Ocean’s Eleven and The Italian Job in a city environment. Where the goal of the adventure is to try and find a trove of treasure.”
Players will be in an urban treasure hunt environment, having to use their wits to solve puzzles and track clues across the city to find the loot – and don’t worry. The dragon in the title refers to the currency used in Waterdeep, not an actual dragon… well… as far as they’re telling us at the moment anyway.
Here’s a collection of videos with more information about the areas of the city and some of the important people that reside there. You might recognise some of the names 😉
