So last Friday at Westmead Nerd Sanctuary Chris, Craig, Jim and Tom had a wonderful evening frolicking through space. First we explored the galaxy in Pulsar 2849 and on the way back we Terraformed Mars. The night belonged to Chris but I think everyone enjoyed themselves.
First ever play of Pulsar 2849. A dice drafting game of space exploration, research and gyrodyne spinning.
In a nutshell, the 1st player rolls 9 dice and then players take turns in drafting these dice which enable you to carry out various actions on your turn. The actions range from exploring space, planets and pulsars, developing technologies, constructing transmitters and building gyrodynes. All in an effort to collect victory points.
Thoughts: Everyone seemed to enjoy themselves. There are so many ways to collect VPs that it can be really tough to work out which strategy and path to take that will get you the most. The turns are very quick and it makes for a relatively short game time (around 2 hours). Chris scored a well thought out victory by focusing on completing the end game goals after I had scorched into a decent lead. Looking forward to trying this again.
In a nutshell. Tableau building game where you play cards into your tableau in a collective effort to Terraform the shit out of Mars.
So I’ve played this about 6 or 7 times now and any time I’ve played it with 3 or more players there has always been at least 1 or 2 players new to it. And it’s not a negative reflection on the new players but I just wanna take this out with 4 or 5 people who’ve already played it, no rules explanations and get on with it. I wasn’t quite feeling it the other night and that’s possibly why. And again not a negative reflection but it went on much longer than I thought and I think it’s a game I would happily play for 2 hours or so but after that I feel it starts to drag. So must get it out again soon and put it to the test. Chris also scored a victory in this once again coming from behind in end game scoring.
